Can You Relate? Paper Money Collecting Vs The Credit Crunch

Post keep churning round and round in my mind daily, but I have not done anything about it, because what I have to say the most has little to do with collecting Paper Money. All that pre-occupies me at the moment to be honest is the credit crunch, the state of the global economy and how we are going to get ourselves out of the mess we now find ourselves.

I know that some of us are still collecting and enjoying our collections, its good therapy and therefore if we are we should continue, but for now I would like to ask you my friends to indulge me a bit. Instead of starting a brand new blog I would like to continue to use this one as an avenue to express my views about what is going on around me as concerns finances, the economy and what we should do or how we should view our world.

Paper money collecting helped me to understand a lot about the history of money, banking and to some extent the economies of the West. What did I learn? In a nutshell that our economy as we know it today has been built on bankers giving out credit first that they had stored up in their vaults and then as Paper Money evolved, they started giving out credit over and above the value of gold and silver in their vaults. Obviously they had to keep an eye on devaluing the money by over extending credit. The shrewd bankers got the formula right and thus they built economies that have lasted generations supported and supporting the governments of each generation!

Unfortunately, this system has now gone bust. So what are we going to do about it? First we need to ask why it went burst. There are lots of reasons.

  • Reliance on Credit or should I say Debt
  • The rise of the computer
  • The demise of the manufacturing economies in the west
  • The rise of the Asian manufacturing economies
  • The decadence of our Morals in the West
Just to mention a few.

We will explore all these in the coming weeks, after which I shall hopefully be able to get back to the art of collecting Paper Money.

Paper Money Collecting is Back

Thank you so much for coming back to visit over and over again, even though this blog has been quite quiet during the last month. The terror of silence, no phone line no broadband hit me really bad during the last month but finally despite the credit crunch, bank failings that have befallen our economies in this global mess, a ray of light appears and normalcy is restored once again.

So we now have a new President elected to office in the United States. We do pray that his efforts will yet again bring peace, hope, love and prosperity to the rest of the world and his homeland as well. Without this paper money may suffer greatly in the months to come.

We shall wait and see how all the new changes will pan out.

I will be back on a more frequent basis.

Once again thanks for visiting.

No Paper Money Collecting Posts

Hi all, this is an unusual post, my appologies for not posting last week and even this is a very short one. Due to moving house and no internet connection, its been practically impossible for me to get on-line. Do bare with me and I should get back to nomality in another week.

In the meantime, don't let the credit crunch or the losses on the Stock Market
phase you, its not easy but we will all get through it somehow. And we hope that Paper Money will retain some of its value in the process.

Do You Have Fake Coins or Paper Money in Your Pocket?

Did you know that the number of fake coins in circulation has doubled in recent years? I didn't! So just as we are trying to out smart the counterfeit guys on the Paper Money front we now have to be aware that our coins are under attack.

This is the problem with greed, forging £5, £10, £20, notes is not working out so £1 coins are now under attack. Nothing is too small for these guys so watch out. Regardless of what we think it is big money for the bad guys.,up to £2 million a year! That's huge!

So what's the consequences of forging coins, it's criminal and carries a 10 year sentence, worse still not only forging coins but using them is illegal in Britain, so what out and be careful what coins you collect as change.

How can you tell that a coin is fake? One tell tale sign is when your coin wont work in a vending machine, this has happened to me a couple of times, another sign is when the inscription on the edge of the coin is not distinct or lettering type is wrong. Another thing is if the head of the Queen and the reverse image are aligned differently.s

I am really concerned about this trend as there is no protection against this kind of deceit. How many of your coins in your wallet right now are the real thing? I am now more concerned about coins than I am of paper money.

Paper Money Collecting and The Credit Crunch

Twenty Pound - by Austin_UK

I went to the bank today, Halifax (HBOS), only to find it virtually empty with new paper money being the only bank notes available in these very hard times of a credit crunch. So now I have crispy uncirculated £10 and £20 notes to add to my collection. But at what price?

Didn't we see this coming? Bad debts have piled up for years, and bad credits for decades so we now stand at a point where uncertainty in the financial market is about to take over our econmic lives as we once knew it.

Is your bank going to go under? My simple advice is this, diversify now! Don't keep all your money in one account. Find out the maximum amount that the government will cover each banks account for and keep only that amount in each account.

I like the new notes keep the ones you need to and lets pray that the powers that be will take whatever steps to nip this thing from spreading any further. This is wishful thinking, as action really should have been taken a long while before.

The town of Lewes with their newly launched Lewes Pound has taken their financial destiny in their hands and it might be working! For the rest of us we can only hope that the credit crunch wont drowm our banknotes any further!

The Lewes Pound - The Newest Banknote In England

I was pleasantly suprised that Lewes, a town in Britain had just released the latest paper money banknote. 10, 000 notes were printed and are nearly sold our already. Maybe sold out is a wrong way to put it as these notes are not meant for collector's albums, instead they are supposed to remain in circulation and spent in and around the town of Lewes.

So why is this proud English town resorting to releasing a new paper note? The have many reasons but I like the one about it's their answer to the present global credit crunch. They have definitely taken their financial matters seriously and into their own hands.
Personally I would like to add this to my collection, but wont at the moment as this is not what the Lewes Pound was printed for. I will wait until much later when things have settled and they have released another batch of these beautiful green notes into circulation.
Wont to find out more about the Lewes Pound? Go to this Paper Money site and read all about it.

Are You Still Collecting Paper Money?

It's been a long break from collecting paper money and blogging about it, and I'm glad to be back once more. After the month away I'm looking to bring some fresh eyes into how this blog is structured and presented. Thank you everyone for coming back and reading the blog while I was down and out (figuratively speaking that is). I hope that the information I've gathered over the past year has been useful to you and I'm looking forward to revealing more of what I'm learning as the months go by.

So how are we all doing with the Credit Crunch and the all important American Race for the White House? Luckily this is not a political journal or else I would have been boring you with my views about this particular election, being that I am both black and a woman. You never know, my views might make pretty interesting reading for some!

Anyway back to our favorite topic, how is your collection going? Mine hasn't progressed in the last month but I'm hoping to move it on as the days go by.

I found this site, apparently its been around for a while, its got a new look and I think if you are looking for some coins or currency for your collection or gifts for a friend or child, you may find something interesting here and most of the items are under a dollar. Check-out this Coin and Paper Money Auction Site and you'll see what I mean.

Do You Miss The Old Banknotes From France?

There is something about those old French Banknotes, they are colourful, encompassing so much detail, what beautiful notes they produced in days gone by.
I collect world banknotes but I'm sure if I ever decided to narrow it down to just one country I'ld choice France most probably.

Just behold the beauty:

The 1940 "Violet"

The 1956 Bonaparte

The 1977 "Quentin de la Tour"

Paper Money To be Burned in Taipei, C hina

Did you know that it's a custom to burn paper money in Taipei? Incredible stuff, but there you go this is the right spirit to have, their attachment to the much sort after paper is non existent it seems. There is a credit crunch around us here so we in the West wouldn't dare increase our hardship by burning the little we have.

But there is another consideration that has been forgotten and that is, environmental safety, burning the notes would create a heavy mass of pollution. The government is therefore doing a lot to ensure that people are aware that this practice though grounded in their culture has little or no place in todays world as consideration has to be given to keeping the environment from pollution.
Will you be burning anything this summer?

China's Olympic Banknotes are Instant Collectors Items

The Bank of China has started issuing the Olympic Banknotes, and I think history is being made right before our eyes. If I am wrong do correct me, but this is the first time that a new banknote has had such instant success. Just watch this video and let me know what you think. The value of these banknotes has skyrocketed even before they get out of the banks.

£20 Note Was The Most Copied British Banknote

42-15535702, originally uploaded by Sauteed Brain Cells.

Did you know that in 2007 a total of 290,000 counterfeit banknotes were removed from circulation and a majority of these were £20 notes.

In actual fact the Bank of England released some figures recently and out of the 290,000 fake notes retrieved, 276,000 were £20 notes!

This is the reason why we actually have new £20 notes, the redesigned banknotes have improved security features. And this strategy has actually worked as large as the proportion of the fake £20 notes are , the Bank of England figures show that counterfeiting the £20 notes is on a decline. The number of notes taken out of circulation had decreased by 24 per cent and the total face value of fake notes has been reduced by £1,800,000.

My Paper Money Collecting Absence.

Apologies to all my Paper Money Collecting readers who have patiently waited for a new post for over a week now. I have not been on holidays or I would have informed you. But life all the same has been very busy and challenging. I am hoping that now things will slowly get back to normal and I can continue blogging.

Just to let you know that I may not be able to make frequent posts as before but there should be at least a weekly post and one on events, making a total of two weekly from now on. As life improves I shall get up to speed.

Thanks for bearing with me folks.

New Irish Banknotes Issued - Old Bushmills Distillery Honoured.

The Old Bushmill Distillery in Co. Antrim

Apart from the Euro banknotes circulating in the Republic of Ireland, did you know that Ireland was granted the rights to issue its own banknotes and Northern Ireland has taken full advantage of this, they have Bank of England Notes and paper money issued by the Bank of Ireland in denominations of £5,10, 20 and 50. These pound notes have the same value as the Bank of England notes.

Now to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Old Bushmills Distilery in county Antrim the new 2008 Irish notes will have an image of the distilery on its reverse. It is believed that yonks before King James granted the Distillery a License in 1608, King Henery's army had been enjoying the whiskey from this legendary distillery.

Check out this new £5 Irish Banknote on Sale now

Paper Money Collecting Serious or Just a Fun Blog?

Since I was unable to make my usual post on Friday about Paper Money Collecting and Banknote Events around the world I've been asking myself the question, "Is this a serious or Fun Blog?"

Of course I want it to be a Fun Blog, but it is also serious in nature, as my readers have come to expect to find out what's happening around them in the numismatic field, every weekend as well as other important banknote information on the paper money scene . I failed to bring you this information and I do apologize profusely for my failure.

Without wanting to bore you with the personal challenges I am encountering right now, I do need to let you know that I am struggling to get a full hour to spend on Paper Money Collecting now compared to 3-4 hours a couple of months ago. Even this post is being squeezed in between several duties, jobs and chores that I need to get done today.

Please bear with me and I shall be back to speed in the next week or two: More success to you my Paper Money Collecting and Banknote readers as you continue to widen the horiz0n and learn about this great hobby.

Nigerian Banknotes: Inconsistent Designs and Features

Having taken a bit of a closer look at the Nigerian Banknotes now in circulation I realize that there are fundamental inconsistencies in the designs and features of these paper money issues. Take a look at these notes now in circulation. Excuse me I do know they are mostly not in good condition, but these are money in cirulation given to be by anybody and everybody while I was home a couple of months ago and believe you me there are other notes in worse condition of wear and tear and misuse still in circulation.

These notes are the newest in circulation and mostly polymer notes, they curiously also do not have the Naira sign on them, I wonder why?

The missing Naira sign

These notes are also still in circulation but are the older notes but these have the naira sign on them. Maybe part of the problem is because Nigeria outsources its banknote issue to foreign companies! A big pity since the country really can afford to print its own banknotes. There is apparently an investigation underway, pertaining to corruption in the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company. Some officials have been accused of asking for a huge lump sum of money in order to get the machines needed for Nigeria to start printing its own banknotes. The deals fell through because the money wasn't forthcoming. Now the country spends billions of naira printing Nigerian banknotes overseas.

US Paper Money Novelty Note - Obama on US Banknote

Just a fun banknote item with Barack Obama on the face of US Money. If he makes it this will definitely be a first, helps us see reality of what Americans are doing and how different it is from the norm. Though I must say that a lot of fuss has been made about Obama being black, but is he really truly just black?

To start with what am I? I am a black woman with dual nationality, born or African parents in Europe over 40 years ago. Luckily for me I've lived in both continents and do not have a nationality crisis. I therefore feel that I can at least use this opportunity to voice my opinion about this great shift in American politics.

Its great that America can consider a woman or a black man for the number one job in America. Yet there are fundamental problems with this progression. My reservation stems from the fact that a person of dual race heritage in US is always considered black, when it is a white and black issue by both sides of the coin?

My take on this issue is be careful all of you open your eyes wide before you vote!!Anyway the novelty note looks great find up more...

Banknote and Paper Money News: The Direct Express Debit Card

Finally a solution is in sight for the 4 million Americans without bank accounts who have to depend on paper cheques to access their monthly social benefits. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has found a solution and a new Direct Express debit card for social security payments has now been launched in 10 states, this debit card will be available to all shortly as the plan is to roll it out over the nation during the summer months.

This is a great step forward as you can imagine how frustrating it is waiting on your social security cheques via the post. Delays in arrival cause so much stress for many families, not to talk about the problem of cashing the cheques through unscrupulous money services who eat up some of the much needed money via commission for the service rendered.

4 million people are now being given an opportunity to start getting their paper money affairs in order and I think this is a great move forward and will help to revive the economy some. Read more about this at The Direct Express Debit Card Launch.

Banknote and Paper Money Events This Week

Summer is finally here and there are less Paper Money Events during the week than there has been in the last couple of months. I'm beginning to think my proposal to start a log of Weekday events might not have been needed. But we'll see.

There are no events I can find for the USA at the moment. If you know of any please share the information in the comment box.
