Old Banknotes in Old Dusty Books?

Do you have any old notes in between an old book or Bible? If so you might be in luck. Banknotes printed locally in old towns and cites all over England seem to be rising in value incredibly!

Take for example, the 200 year old banknote from Whitehaven, which sold for £1,800, in London on Monday.

The exact date of production is unknown as it was never circulated, the bank itself only lasted 20 years.

The incredible thing is that this notes face value is a mere £1.05 and it was only expected to sell for £500 - £700, but to see it go for more than double!

So if you do have an old note in between those old books in the attic, get them out treat it with care and get it over to a professional who can check it out and value it for you. You never know.

For pictures and more background information about the area go to Whitehaven

King Rama IX of Thailand : Banknotes Celebrate His 80th Birthday

King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand popularly known as Rama IX, cerebrated his 80th birthday on December 5th 2007. To commemorate this landmark 3 uncut banknotes of 1,5,and 10 Baht denominations were released on November 28, 2007.

The king is the longest serving monarchy in existence today, he has been on the throne longer than Queen Elizabeth II as he ascended the throne in 1946.

There are a few things about this King that makes him stand out. He was born in America, studied in Switzerland and has a deep love for his people, and they for him. From comments I've read all over the net I kind of get the idea that I'm watching "Going to America", the people of Kumanda I think it was called really loved their "Prince"

The King has four children, one son and three girls. One of his a daughters is a Professor in one of the Universities and another one relinquished her title as Princess in order to marry an American citizen. Her only son Khun Pomo was lost during the Tsunami disaster and so the King Rama IX shared a loss with his people in a very personal and sad way as one of his grandsons was a victim of this unforgettable disaster.

The 3 Sisters on 200 Peso Dominican Banknotes

At the end of 2007 the Dominican Republic issued a 200 Pesos Oro Note. It has the portraits of three sisters, the Mirabal Sisters, Patricia, Minerva and Maria Teresa, were brutally murdered by a tyrannical leader in 1960.
I did a little search and felt really sad and ashamed that as human beings we could be so unfair and wicked to others.
Sadly this whole incident reminded me of the Iraqi situation. When will we ever learn? America tends or tended to support these corrupt tyrants because they were opposed to communism as if this alone made for a great leader.
Apparently the leader in the Republic at the time, Rafael Trujillo, had been trained by the US Marines and enjoyed US support until his death as a leading Latin American anti- communist! The fact that he ruled the country with iron fists , acquired so much wealth for himself while his people suffered and worst of all disappeared and were killed by his secret service didn't appear to count for much!
The sisters were members of an underground movement and had with their husbands been in and out of prison for various offenses to do with resisting the government. At the end of 1960 their husbands were all in prison and the sisters had gone to visit their husbands together. On their way back they were brutally murdered put back in their vehicle and it was rolled down a cliff to make it look like an accident.
These were women who stood up for what was right and just and did not let fear or talk of being the weaker gender stop them. They were mothers and their children were left orphaned so that some day the rest of humanity and their county at large would make the changes to enable the people of the Dominican Republic life a life free of tyranny.

The New 2007 Dominican Republic 200 Peso Oro

The sisters, Patricia, Minerva and Maria Teresa were an important symbol of resistance during this era and their deaths served as a catalyst for the revolt and subsequent downfall of the despotic regime that did so much harm to its people.

Paper Money Collecting: The US 100,000 Dollar Banknote

For the record there is a $100,000 US Banknote. It may not be in circulation or in print but it is still considered legal tender, thought it was never used as a note in circulation even when it was released. These were notes used within the banking system to transfer large amounts of funds to the Federal reserve. No bank is interested in using this system as the IT opportunities out there make it so much more easier to transfer money electronically.

Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924) graces the face of the 100,000 dollar note, a controversial character if I had ever meet one. He was the 28th President of the United States of America. He is remembered for a lot of things, including The Revenue Act, Federal Reserve Act, The Espionage Act and The Sedition Act.

The things he did that stand out for me is not the fact that he was the first American President to visit the Pope while in office nor is it to do with his contribution to Americas foreign policy over the decades even right now his way of thinking is still present.

For me Woodrow is probably one of the great men on Paper Money that I have a problem with since he was in support of segregation and ended up sending a lot of black workers out of jobs with the government over racial grounds.

Anyway the US $100,00 note is a collector's item if you have got one. Mark my wood its a gem.

World Paper Money : A Coat of Many Colors

(Swiss Francs)

Colour Lovers scoured through the 191 currently circulating currencies of the 192 member states of the United Nations to find some of the most colorful, unique and dramatic bank notes... and my verdict is Paper Money is really a coat of many colors. Banknotes are usually the heart of a nation on show to the world at large. The colors of some of these notes are so vibrant, yet others are so earthy. The coat of many colors are world paper money exhibit shows us how different yet beautiful our nations are. Enjoy!

Are Colorful Banknotes Real Money?

There is one note I'm trying to locate I know I'll find it soon, must be from Latin America I think. What a beautifully crafted colorful note? The colour of money is another reason why I enjoy collecting money.

Unfortunately some people I hear consider money that contains lots of color unreal, and have even gone as fas as calling it monopoly money. How sad. Why should the color or the lack of it dictate the value of the note?

Color is a very important part of mankind's existence. What a bland world it would have been without color. Remember those black and white movies as lovable and memorable as they are would you trade in your colorful high definition videos and cinema movies for them?

Feast your eyes on the following.

Now these notes from the Netherlands. wrongly made people think that serious money had no business with being colorful. The Netherlands printed these note and only stopped because the Euro was introduced.

These colorful notes were real banknotes with denominations and exchange rates: real notes used for real exchange and now real banknotes in real paper money collections items as the Euro has taken their place. For even more colorful money images go to this colorful paper money web page.

The Value of Paper Money

The value of paper money is a discussion that will always be around in one form or another. Everyday we listen to the news and we are told continuously that the value of top world currencies, such as the Yen, Pound Sterling or US Dollar has gone down or up on the day. The gloom of the mortgage mess which has swept America and is about to hit the UK in a bad way makes everyone a bit nervous at the moment.Yet the value of paper money to a collector is a bit different in perspective.

Apart from the fact that there is a universally accepted grading system for paper money in the numismatic world, you also have other historical and market forces that help to dictate the value of each banknote that comes up for sale.

The Universal Grading System
UN- Uncirculated: a banknote in perfect unused condition
XF or EF - Extremely Fine: a banknote in almost perfect condition is the upper grade in this category , the notes has no creases and folds, it may have been used but not extensively. On the lower grade it would come as a very attractive note showing some light handling, with light folds and corners may be slightly rounded, the note should be clean.
VF - Very Fine: This is a banknote showing more wear with several folds vertically and horizontally, it may also have some dirt but should not be floppy with no tears but may be slightly worn on the edges and corners.
F - Fine: This note has been circulated a lot, comes with many folds, creases and wrinkling, it may not be excessively dirty but is soft and the edges show much more handling, with minor tears in the border areas. There maybe staple holes apparent on the note but no holes present which may have been caused by handling.
VG - Very Good: These notes are well circulated may have a hole in the center caused by excessive folding, the paper may be discolored or stained and is usually limp with corners showing wear and rounding.

(My extremely creased 1000 Ghanaian Cedis)
(given to me by a friend who left it in a pair of jeans...)

G - Good: The banknote is well used and circulated and shows damage caused by prolonged circulation. These include creases, dirt, discoloration, center holes, torn edges, rounded corners, pinholes, staple holes or multiple folds.
P - Poor: This is usually a severly damaged banknote with large parts missing.

My collection would therefore be graded as mostly UC and XF with only a few VG and G notes included. Nowhere near a scanner or else I would have attempted to load up a few examples for this post. Will do this as soon as I can get a breather (one of the boys has had a throat infection which has meant no school and no work for me all week.) Anyway once I can I shall put up a full illustrated page on the Paper Money Palace store website.

The Value of Uncirculated Paper Money

Most paper money collectors want uncirculated banknotes for their collection, but to be very honest with you this is over rated and not very realistic. Now I guess a few of you reading this may not agree with me, and as I'm still relatively new at this I stand to be corrected. But in my humble opinion insisting on uncirculated banknotes for almost all collections is quite impossible.

The Historical Perspective

The older the notes you are collecting the harder it will be to get UN or XF notes, this is just a fact of life, and I'm sure a lot of older collectors will testify that some of the banknotes they had previously discounted have now doubled or even tripled in price while they are left with an empty space still searching for that elusive UC banknote!

The Market Perspective

Now if particular banknotes are in great demand but not in great supply, you have the market forces now dictating the price. Lack of supply could be cause by a simple fact that not too many of the very old notes have survived anyway, or it could be a man made scarcity of dealers and collectors hoarding the notes to see if the price will continue to rise so that they can make a big profit at the end of the day!

An Opinion About The Value of Paper Money

My take on this issue is to collect the best of what I can lay my hands on, if I get better notes I can always exchange or sell off the extras. Uncirculated banknotes may be the highest and most desirable grade but I would hate to end up with a fake note just because I wanted an UN one. I hope that as collectors we change our mindset about the value of paper money we collect, before the art of cleaning-up banknotes totally takes over the hobby.

Polymer Money: Who Is On The Australian $5 Banknote?

The Australian $5 banknote has the portrait of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II and really she needs no other introduction except to say The Queen of England is probably the one person whose portrait graces the notes of many countries all over the world.

Why is this you may ask? The simple answer is Britain has for many years been the leader of a group of countries known as the Commonwealth and the Queen is the head of the Commonwealth of Nations. A lot of these countries have paper money banknotes with the portrait of the Queen of England on it. Australia happens to be one of them.

Queen Elizabeth is officially the Queen regnant of Australia and her portrait can also be found on an earlier $1 Australian Banknote
