Paper Money Collecting - Video of Old British Banknotes

As I've said before, my technical skills are quite limited, so you'll have to bear with me.

In the meantime, I've been searching for some video's and pictures to help bring to life the beauty and historic value of the bank notes collectors find so fascinating, and I'm glad to say that the search has started to pay off.

Today we'll start with a collection by Chuck, who is a very generous and funny man, and I hope this comes out in the video you are about to watch.

Enjoy

Paper Money Sale - $500 Bank Note for Grabs

In case you are a paper money collector interested in US Bank Notes, please read on. I wouldn't want you to miss out on this sale without taking a look.

This 1834 $500 Bank note was the last of America's $500 bills, the highest denomination is now $100.

You never know if this will be another record find.

Visiting my link and making a purchase will mean that I make a little commission on the sale. You can obviously buy similar notes from dealers if they have them available. But I would appreciate it if you did visit the page and if you decide to buy the little commision I get will make it possible for me to continue to provide quality content on this page.

EBay does it again - Paper Money Sells at Record Price.

Did you know that a good place for a bargain, even for unique paper money notes was eBay?
Well an English gentleman had quite a great story to tell about his eBay find.

You know when you and the wife have some family time and set out a list of projects to do, in the winter or summer months, and you resent the fact that these are going to dig a deep hole into you pockets? Well I guess this was one of those occasions.

The temptation to buy or not to buy these unique English £10 notes was a bit too much for the gentleman in question. So he did just what his collector's spirit wanted.

After which his wife said to him,

"You seem very good at buying all these so-called bargains, Laurence, but you don't ever sell them! I would like the house completely redecorated and you have just spent £1250 out of the budget!”

So he decided to make an effort and sell the notes to appease his wife, and guess what, they sold at a record price of £6,600 at Spink in June!

So apart from eBay are there any other sources of getting your collection started?

Now with a £6,600 sale, I'm sure the gentleman could now say to his wife:
"You see honey, it's just as I thought, my paper money collecting has paid off and you will have the house redecorated as requested courtesy of my eBay bargain find."

All I can say is, what a find, I hope we can replicate the same as we learn and grow with this fascinating hobby of paper money collecting.

The Different Aspects of Collecting Paper Money.

Paper Money Collecting is a very wide and varied hobby. Needless to say it is more varied in the US where this hobby has taken route and is growing rapidly. In actual fact the1800-1900 US notes which were very interesting are now beyond the pockets of the casual collector.
I found that there are three main areas of interest which collectors seem to choose from. For me money constraints was my deciding factor. The main areas are listed below. Enjoy.

1. World Paper Money
a. Recent and general world paper money
Quite a large number of people collect world paper money. This is sometimes the most inexpensive way to start a collection (thus my route). Especially if all you are doing is collecting notes from every country.
Other ways of building a world collection is to focus on a specific country or countries of interest.
b. Older and rare world paper money. Collectors in this field concentrate on specific periods in a countries history, or even specific portraits or serial numbers on notes.

2. US Paper Money Collection
This is a very wide varied well researched field, and you find people interested in one or more of the following aspects of collecting.
a. US Large Size Notes
b. US Small size notes
c. US Fractional currency notes
d. US Obsolete notes
e. Confederate States of America notes

3. Other types of collections include
a. Error notes: printing, paper and cutting errors
b. Souvenir Cards
c. Cheques
d. Travelers Cheques

The cost of the more interesting and rare items of paper money has sored in recent years, I actually read somewhere (even if it was jokingly) someone considering taking out a mortgage to boost their collection.

"I rarely consider taking out a mortgage on the house to finance my collecting habits. However, the Frederick Mayer Confederate Notes and Bonds sale by Smythe July 6 had me pause to seriously consider it. Mayer's collection was that good!"

What kind of Paper Money am I Collecting?

So what type of paper money have I decided to start collecting?

Actually I was going to go for just any kind of banknotes, from wherever and whenever, as well as various types of paper monies such as old cheques, stocks and bonds. But when I took a look at the price guides available and the eBay auction prices, I got a bit more realistic with my quest.

Needless to say I do not have a lot of disposable income at my disposal at this very moment. What with mortgage interest rises, and maxed out credit cards that need to be paid, I am not going to be expending a fortune on my new found love in the immediate future.

Oh no no, no impulsive expenditure on any old beautiful and enticing bank notes for now. I've decided to concentrate on collecting current worldwide banknotes, which I think I can get at face value or less. This will be my focal point for the moment.

Having said this, I am going to use the next couple of months to learn as much as I possibly can so that when the time comes, I will be knowledgeable enough to start a commendable collection.

Paper money collection
has quite a respectable range of interest, and I shall be looking into what I've learnt so far and discussing it here in the next few days.

Paper Money Collecting is Very Fascinating and Helping me Fulfill a Dream

I actually stumbled across paper money collecting accidentally, and now I find myself trying to find out as much as I can about this very fascinating hobby on a daily basis. I had gone home to Lagos, for a while as my mum had passed on. On my return I found amongst my notebooks an old note which had just been discontinued. I didn't like this at all as I had tried to return all notes to the bank before the deadline but now I had this one note still in my possession.

Then I was searching on the net for paper suppliers and you know how you hit on a site which really is off the topic you're searching for? Well that's exactly what happened to me, but I was so fascinated I couldn't stop reading and looking through the images of old notes it contained. I've been reading ever since and I'm just about to make my first purchase of paper money to start up my collection. My husband thinks I'm crazy! He just can't relate or understand what's so fascinating, but he's supportive and that's what counts in the end.

In the meantime, it occurred to me that the old note was not useless after all. I've even gone through the house and put together all the foreign notes we have hanging about from our various travels.

One of my pet dreams as a teenager was wanting to be a writer, I had done little or nothing about this for years, so with my budding interest and enthusiasm about Paper Money Collecting in place, I finally decided to take the bull by the horn and blog about my new found hobby. So now in my late 40's I'm finally seeing one of my teenage dreams for myself come true. I love the Internet! Don't you?

PS. I should be able to get some pictures of my initial collection up on the site soon.

Talk to you later.
